Dr. Phillip Frank offers cosmetic bonding to his patients as an easy, affordable way to improve and enhance the smile. If you have been looking for a way to correct a variety of cosmetic dental complaints, cosmetic bonding may be the right solution for you. By simply repairing a number of small defects on visible teeth, you may be surprised how dramatically your smile can be improved. Unlike many other types of corrective dental procedures, the results of bonding can be seen immediately.

Cosmetic bonding is a common and routine procedure. It involves the placement of a tooth-colored resin material (a very strong type of plastic material) on or around a tooth. After application, it is hardened with a special light, causing the resin to “bond” with the tooth below. It can be used to correct a variety of common dental complaints, including:

  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Short or asymmetrical teeth

Bonding can also be used in place of dark amalgam fillings, so that filled cavities take on the appearance of the surrounding tooth. Previously placed amalgam fillings can be replaced with bonding material as part of a holistic approach to improve dental aesthetics.

Very little preparation is required for the cosmetic bonding procedure. Bonding is placed on the surface of the tooth, thus anesthesia is rarely required for the procedure, unless the resin is being used to fill a decayed tooth or replace an old filling. Before beginning the procedure, Dr. Frank will use a shade guide to determine the correct composite resin color for your teeth. Next, the surface of the tooth (or teeth) will be roughened and a conditioning liquid will be applied to prepare the tooth for bonding. These preparation techniques allow the resin material to adhere to the tooth. Next, the tooth-colored resin is applied to the tooth and artistically shaped and smoothed to a natural appearance on or around the tooth. Once Dr. Frank has achieved the desired shape, he will use an ultraviolet light to harden the resin material. Final shaping, filing, and polishing will be done after the material has hardened. Depending on the corrections being done, cosmetic bonding typically takes 30 to 60 minutes per tooth to complete.

After the procedure, you will be able to resume normal activities immediately. You may be given instructions on how to correctly care for your bonded teeth, as the resin is more fragile than natural tooth material. For example, Dr. Frank may advise that you avoid hard candies and biting directly into hard food, such as apples. Additionally, resin is more susceptible to staining than the natural tooth material, so you may be advised to avoid coffee, tea, and red wine, or to brush your teeth immediately after drinking these beverages.
